Christmas in July - Fun Facts and History!

Christmas in July - Fun Facts and History!

The Australian 'Christmas in July' celebration is a somewhat unusual and some suggest even slightly eccentric festival that now attracts international travellers to the land down-under! Christmas in July' or Yulefest as it is also known is believed to have been born by accident one snowy wintery night in July of 1980 at an award-winning boutique hotel 'Mountain Heritage' in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. A group of Irish guests noticed the irony of winter weather in July and wanting to recreate the feelings associated with winter back home, asked the hotel proprietor if he could organise a few Christmas-style food and festivities for them that night. Thus was born Christmas in July sporting Christmas decorations, snowmen, mulled wine, carols, roast dinners, mince pies, plum pudding, egg nog, bonbons, Christmas crackers, log fires and the occasional snow fall amongst a magical winter Yuletide wonderland of festivities.

300 LED EFFICIENT OUTDOOR LIGHTING FOR 2 09 USD PER MONTH

Scotty, (MUDDYMUDDYMUDDMANN), came up and installed 4000 watts of solar panels, and some grid tie inverters for me, and he noticed that it got pretty dark at night between the office and the house. and the sensor for the big light doesn't come on untill i walked half way across the yard in the dark. So we went to Wal-mart and got 3 boxes of 100 led Christmas lights, and we connected them for some nice efficient outdoor lighting. Each set uses 7.2 watts times 3 strands. (21,6 watts total) all figured out, that comes to .09 cost per month on the electric bill. not bad. Thanks! Boomer

1. In Austria - Church service famous for its music! The mid-night mass service, a tradition on Christmas Eve, is featured by trumpeters playing choral music from the city tower or steeple of the main church. Often the service features music written by Franz Bruber who composed the famous and popular Silent Night. He also wrote nearly 100 masses, hymns and carols. On Christmas Eve Silent Night is heard for the first time on the radio and repeated hourly. It is eagerly awaited and the effect is known to be spellbinding!

3. In Egypt - A tradition is for a new outfit to be worn to the mass! Christmas is celebrated on the 7th January their official public holiday. It is tradition for everyone, on the eve of Christmas, to go to church wearing a completely new outfit. The service ends at mid-night marked with the ringing of church bells when everyone goes home to a feast called "Fata" consisting of bread, rice, garlic and boiled meat. On Christmas morning they visit neighbors and friends with their popular "kaik" a type of shortbread eaten with a drink called "shortbat".

4. In Italy - Famous for elaborate and artistic manger scenes! Christmas Eve people go from church to church viewing elaborate and artistic manger scenes. Each has a display of figures made of clay and plaster. Included is an ox and an ass as legend had it they warmed the Christ Child with their breath! Occasionally local heroes are added to the scenes and are given special blessings. Contests are often held between churches of the same town for the best crib.

5. In Russia - Traditional lantern and candle parade! After the Christmas Eve service people holding lanterns and candles parade around the church then re-enter to sing carols before going home for a late Christmas Eve dinner. On Christmas day it is popular for children as well as the church choir to go door to door caroling the song "The Nativity" or "Your Birth".

6. In Spain - The mass described as one pure voice! A tradition of ringing bells at mid-night interrupts Christmas Eve gaiety, calling all to the Christmas mass service called "La Misa Del Gallo" or "Mass of the Rooster". A rooster announces the new day by crowing and like wise the Misa Del Gallo announces the new day. The most beautiful service is at the monastery of Montserrat near Barcelona highlighted by a boy's choir performing the mass described as "one pure voice". This is followed by the main Christmas dinner where they feast until the wee hours of the morning. An old Spanish verse says "This is the good-night, therefore it is not meant for sleep!"

7. In Wales - 3 A.M. Service Revived Today! Old traditions remain steadfast often in rural areas of Wales. One such old and popular tradition was the main Christmas service called "Plygain". It starts in the dark hours of Christmas day from 3 a.m. until the rising of the sun on Christmas morning; usually around 6am. A highlight of the service is carol singing by either individuals, trios, quartets or choirs. While this candlelight service was popular in olden times it was discontinued in the 19th century. The service was revived in recent years by Methodist Chapels.

8. In Syria - The Touch of Peace Christmas Ceremony! Mass is held early on Christmas morning. In the middle of the church a bonfire is lit and ancient hymns are sung as the celebrant carries an image of the Christ child in a joyous procession around the building. Following this is the tradition called "Touch of Peace" whereby the celebrant touches the nearest person who then passes the touch of peace from one to another until everyone is touched.

Christmas in July - Fun Facts and History!

Interestingly, the earliest reference for the phrase 'Christmas in July' was in July 1933 at a girl's summer camp in North Carolina USA. The term later gained momentum with the release of the Hollywood movie comedy 'Christmas in July' in 1940. Later in 1942, the Calvary Baptist Church in the USA celebrated 'Christmas in July' featuring a sermon 'Christmas Presents in July' which also included the erection of a Christmas tree, which by the end of the sermon would be covered with donations and gifts from the congregation. The donations and gifts are then distributed to missions worldwide. In 1946 this annual service began to be broadcast over local radio. It was not until the 1950's that American advertisers lead the way for "Christmas in July" themes for sales.

While the Yulefest has become an incredibly popular annual Australian non-official holiday season, Christmas in July in Copenhagen, Denmark at Bakken is quite unique, featuring the annual World Santa Claus Congress. Bakken is a popular amusement park where hundreds of Santas, Mrs Clauses and elves from around the world come together to be jolly at this festival each year. They hold parades and love to go to the beach for an annual beach paddle. It's known to be quite amusing to see all these Santas at the beach. The King of Santas for the year is named during this 'Christmas in July festival' and many challenging issues are discussed like what is Santa's true homeland and what size presents should be given! There are even belly shaking chuckle competitions as part of the festivities at this fun event.

Here are some universal thoughts on some of the symbols related to Christmas in July:

- Red is the main colour of Christmas in July - represents the magical flow of life, the blood that flows within all of us - so remember to let your love, passion and energy flow. Commit to show your love a little more each day and do what you do, no matter how insignificant you may consider it, with a little more love and enthusiasm each day and you will discover a new passion for life within you and a new flow of energy.

- The second colour of Christmas in July is green - greenery reminds us to honour the everlasting transformative element of nature. Everything is radiating energy. Energy does not die it merely transforms. Green soothes our heart knowing we are part of an endless cycle that disburses and rebirths anew.

- The combination of Red and Green on the colour wheel - red and green are opposites and opposites create balance. These two prominent colours of Christmas in July draw us to a deep unconscious connection to harmony and peace that we all seek within. The Christmas wreath has both red and green and is tied with a ribbon to remind us that we are all tied together; we belong to each other!

Outdoor Christmas Lights

Outdoor Christmas Lights

These lights are gorgeous! I say that as someone who's first word was "light" and who has worked as a Hollywood lighting specialist for 35 years. I'm always looking for something new and special in LED's and this is it. The string is composed of 4 colors of lights -- blue, red, green, yellow -- each on their own circuit, and a tiny plastic control box that let's you select from 8 different light patterns including random.

Outdoor Christmas Lights

I found the faster patterns more appropriate for a Christmas tree or a party, but the Slo Fade was just what I was looking for. Each color slow fades up and slow fades down while overlapping with the next color -- a little reminiscent of a fireworks show.

Outdoor Christmas Lights

The set of lights I ordered a few weeks ago had no identification, no brand, no safety warnings, -- nothing. The one I'm looking at now is a Christmas present for someone so I'll leave it wrapped up. It's in a plastic hang bag with the name "Lucky Star" and the words, "Made in China."
Outdoor Christmas Lights
The strings appear quite well made. You'd think with 5 conductors the string itself would be large and obtrusive, but instead it's a loose, light, and very small bundle of wires, each insulated with the same transparent stuff that covers speaker wire, so it takes on the color of whatever it's against, and it's light enough you can hang it on push pins.
Outdoor Christmas Lights
It seems LED's operated by integrated circuits to produce light patterns is something entirely new. I live in Southern California where the new is always popular, and two days before Christmas I've yet to see another string of programmed LED's.
